Relegation a threat as Newcastle sink lower

When you lose a game you know you should win maybe it's twice as disappointing," Keegan said.

Hughes believes Keegan will guide Newcastle out of their tailspin, which has seen his seven matches in charge yield five defeats and two draws.

In pics: Premier League actionFootball fans' forum"I'm surprised there hasn't been a Keegan effect on the pitch, though there has been a fantastic effect on the surrounding area," Hughes said.

"The scenes you saw when he was appointed prove that. Maybe it hasn't quite happened on the pitch yet, but it's only a matter of time. But the longer they go without a positive result, the more tension and apprehension there will be. I'm sure they'll have enough to stay up."

'Z' says he's close to his 'A' game

And No. 2, whether you close in spring training or whether you pitch the fifth inning. You're going to get the same amount of work, so we don't really have to change anything but the inning the particular pitcher pitches."

Wood and Howry are scheduled to work an inning apiece Saturday in Tempe when the Cubs play the Los Angeles Angels.

Ramirez out Aramis Ramirez was scratched from Friday's game at HoHoKam Park with shoulder soreness, and his return is unknown.

"We have plenty of games," Piniella said. "When he's ready to go, we'll put him out there."

Ramirez said he had the same problem early last spring.

"I don't know what's up with that," he said. "Maybe I don't do the same kind of throwing here I do in the Dominican.

The year of the nest

Forget about white, tan and beige; the new neutrals are toned-down colors. The designers at HGTV.com call these low-key colors "huetrals." Pale, weathered, faded, nature-inspired hues go with everything: soft, buttery yellow; a milky, seafoam green; pretty sky blue and icy gray.

Punch those "huetrals" up a notch with your accessories. On a recent episode of Style Minute, the new multimedia component of my blog, Design Notebook (www.statesman.com/designnotebook), I offered the scoop on the must-have colors for 2008. The Pantone Color Institute announced blue iris as the color of the year, and it's already cropping up everywhere, but its close cousin, purple, is gaining popularity as well.

The editors at Elle Decor reported seeing scores of purples at the January Maison & Objet trade show in Paris.

CapeCodToday Blog Chowder

In a Cape Cod Times editorial today they took the position that it was a good idea. Well, they didn't really stick out their neck; they said it is worth considering.

My feeling is this: Schools should try single sex groupings it and see who it helps without tooting it all over the place as the answer. Results, in terms of test scores and emotional output should be studied. Doctoral dissertations should be encouraged to examine it and survey research should be funded to see how much, if at all, it helps. Finally, the question must be asked if it is worth setting aside Title IX and possibly the culture altering woman's movement to do it?

We need to know these things before we get too infatuated with separating boys and girls at school.

Bruce Lee's Master Subject of Biopics

We all know that teacher Ip Man promoted Chinese kung fu around the world. He's also the teacher of my idol Bruce Lee. So when I took this role I put a lot of pressure on myself," he said.

Yen's reverence for Ip's legacy is testimony to his storied reputation.

Born in Foshan in 1893, Ip started training around 1903 in wing chun. He arrived in Hong Kong in the 1940s to escape the Communist takeover of the mainland. In Hong Kong, he started out teaching kung fu to restaurant workers but broadened his reach to hundreds of students, including Lee, before passing away in 1972.

Lee, who died in 1973 at age 32 from swelling of the brain, studied under Ip for five years, according to his official biography on the Bruce Lee Foundation Web site.

The movie starring Yen isn't the only production about Ip Man in the works.

Sugars changing stations

Working alongside his wife, Nerissa, as news co-anchors for KCOY-TV, Drew Sugars' friendly, mellifluous voice and handsome face have greeted viewers locally most evenings for the past nine years.

But his audience will soon shrink from tens of thousands to several hundred.

He's leaving the Santa Maria station next week to start work as a public information specialist for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department. Instead of the adrenaline rush, long hours and unyielding deadlines of broadcast news, he'll be working four days a week producing employee training videos and a monthly video on Sheriff's Department activities.

His focus will be on helping keep hundreds of employees better informed about what's going on within that multi-faceted agency, including any new equipment and programs.

Marine donates kidney to man he barely knew

Staff Sgt. Darren Smiley was sitting at Thanksgiving dinner in 2006 when he made a decision: He needed to see if he could help a man he barely knew by giving up a kidney.

Within weeks, Smiley, a reservist with Charlie Company, 4th Reconnaissance Battalion, started a lengthy testing process that led him to an operating table Jan. 30 at UCLA Medical Center in California. His left kidney was removed and placed in Daniel Haven, 43, an X-ray technician and father of a 4-year-old girl.

Days after the surgery, Smiley, a 31-year-old father of three who has served two tours in Iraq, shrugged off the donation.

"I have a young son myself, and the waiting list is usually seven or eight years," he said in a Feb. 5 phone interview from California. "I would hope that someone would do the same for me if they had the chance."

The surgery has brought together two clans that had a familial connection but did not know each other particularly well.
