PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. — The televisions in the Mets' clubhouse were on Tuesday morning as they always are before practice. Only this time they weren't tuned to basketball dunks or steroid testimony.

Pedro Martinez and others watched the news of Fidel Castro's resignation as Cuba's president.

Many of the Mets' Latin American players weren't shy with an opinion. Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon even envisioned an avenue of growth.

However, the person most affected by the news had nothing to say.

"I don't know what's going on down there," said pitcher Orlando Hernandez, who fled the country in 1998 to play for the Yankees.

Hernandez still has family in the country and has previously declined comment, citing their safety. He once said he used to listen to the Yankees on the radio and dreamed of playing in the United States.

Librarian Bette Ammon e-mailed a few minutes ago to say that "Water the Elephants," the first selection for the new Huckleberries Online Book Club, arrived at the library Friday. P.S., I just finished reading Slavomir Raciwz "The Long Walk" and recommend it highly. It's a true story about 7 desperate prisoners who break out of a Communist prison in Siberia at the outbreak of World War II, in the dead of winter, and succeed in walking all the way to India, through the Gobi Desert and over the Himalayas. Easy read. Incredible story about man's desire to be free.

They're going from the fifth broadcast network, CW, which combined the winners of the UPN and WB merger, to MyNetworkTV, which scraped together the networks that were left out in the cold. It's one step back, but it could mean two steps forward. The opportunity here is for WWE to have a sense of ownership on a network that's looking for signature original content to build advertising deals and create excitement for the network. CW was concerned about the lack of crossover viewership.
