| Councilman MikeK Recalls Knievel Action Figure
Top: Young MikeK playing with Evel Knievel action figure; bottom: MikeK receives inspiration from his childhood friends before leaving for a Coeur d'Alene City Council meeting. I had a classic Evel Knievel motorcycle riding action figure when I was a kid. The stunts my brothers and I would stage for that motorcycle toy were legendary (riding out a second story window, chasing the dog around the house without getting chewed to ribbons, you name it). RIP Evel. I wonder what happened to Steve Austin, the Six Million Dollar Man who played the role of Evel's arch-nemesis in the boyhood action figure wars?/Councilman MikeK. Question: What was your favorite action figure/doll when you were little? .
Ogilvy shows poise on and off the court
Vanderbilt basketball player A.J. Ogilvy allowed a reporter and photographer to tag along for a day on campus recently. Rand Dining Hall is almost full. Students who dont have their noses in a newspaper, a laptop or breakfast are holding cell phones in both hands, sending text messages with two thumbs on the keypad. .

We got a call from Jim Twite of Brewster this morning that the Cumberland Farms near Route 28 and Bank Street, AND the Harwich Gas at 435 Route 28, Harwichport next to the 400 Club, are both selling regular for $2.29. The price is $2.32 on Rte 6 in Wareham, at both Lukoil and with the hippies... who now have a bedsheet hanging up in their office with "There Goes The Neighborhood " written on it. I love those people. 7-11 in Wareham, $2.32.... same with Exxon at the Buzzards Bay rotary.... ya know, the rotary that used to have the tugboat. $2.51 at the Citgo near the Christmas Tree Shop in Sagamore.... $2.65 at the Citgo on 28 South in Bourne.... $2.64 at the Citgo on 28A, Bourne/Falmouth line, with $2.89 diesel for all you mothertruckers.

SportsBiz: Spring training now a big business
VERO BEACH, Fla. - On a February morning, where the sky and the “Welcome to Dodgertown" sign are both etched in blue, more than 100 fans congregate behind a rope off Vin Scully Way. Their eyes stare at the wide hill, where five pitchers hurl balls at fully equipped catchers, over and over again. Nearby, other pitchers and catchers lie on their bellies and stretch on grass as finely cut as a putting green. The languid atmosphere belies the fact that this time next year, the Los Angeles Dodgers — who have trained at Vero Beach since 1948, the year after Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier — will get in shape at a new facility costing more than $80 million in Glendale, Ariz., one they'll share with the Chicago White Sox. Once a six-week haven where little thought was given to maximizing revenue, spring training, more and more, is becoming a big business.
Scott Boras starts to gets a clue - sort of
Joe Crede made just under $5M last year for the White Sox. Garrett Atkins made $400,000 last year for the Colorado Rockies. Lowell will want a lot more as a FA. Crede, coming off major back surgery, is a big question mark.. Atkins would fit perfectly in the Yankees current cut payroll philosophy...I agree whole heartedly with todays previous squawkers who touted Garrett Atkins. All things considered, it seems like a no-brainer...but as a wise man once said, "things are not always as they seem". Just ask those fans who wanted Detroit and Cleveland vs. the Yanks in the last 2 ALDS. On paper though its Garrett Atkins...... .

O'Malley, legislators brace for revenue report
He said Maryland is in better shape owing to tough decisions made in November's special legislative session, when lawmakers approved more than $1.3 billion in tax increases and about $500 million in cuts. "The likelihood is — given the national economic downturn — that difficult series of decisions will continue," Mr. O'Malley told reporters Tuesday before meeting with the Senate Budget and Taxation Committee. Sen. James E. DeGrange Sr., who is a member of the committee, said lawmakers are looking at every state agency for cuts that will be "painful for all of us." Mr. DeGrange, Anne Arundel Democrat, said the current fiscal climate reminded him of the early 1990s, when the General Assembly had to make repeated budget reductions. Sen.
Perfect partnership
She's a news junkie and loves pitching stories, talking to journalists and doing that side of the business. Prue is exceptionally good at strategy, ideas and writing, so we are a great match. What are your individual weaknesses? Lou tries to be superwoman, juggling family, work, clients and exercise. She is also sometimes too immersed in issues and crises and takes them home. Prue is juggling media commitments as well as her work here, so she sometimes needs to take a chill pill to put it all in perspective. How are these skills, strengths and weakness exploited in the partnerships? While we both love different roles and tasks so it is easy for us to work together. We also cover for each other and step in when one of us is drowning.
