I don't really consider myself a "guest blogger" in this case, more of a caretaker, really, making sure the plants are watered and the fish are fed. I offered to help keep things at a slow idle when I saw that DFO was coming back to the blog multiple times a day while he was supposed to be on vacation. Nevertheless, this article is a very timely piece of perspective considering some of the problems we've had this week.

Fortunately, this group has been, for the most part, very understanding and supportive in Dave's absence. According to the story, though, not all bloggers are quite so fortunate. Romenesko hasn't had a vacation in 7 years. That just ain't right.

Chances of mid-term poll bleak: Badal

Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal here today expressed bleak chances of mid-term Lok Sabha polls under the prevailing political scenario at the Centre. He, however, said his party was ready to face elections at a notice of 5 minutes only.

The Chief Minister had come for a sangat darshan programme. He said the SAD-BJP combine was strong as a rock and there were no differences, as both partners were having good relations. He described a separate meeting of Punjab BJP leaders with the Central leadership of the BJP as internal matter of the party.

He said a grant of Rs 9 crore had been released for the development of Fazilka area so far.

On the Bhankerpur distillery being set up at Ghallu village of Fazilka subdivision, which was strongly opposed by the SAD-BJP combine in the pre-Assembly poll scenario in Punjab, and grant of no-objection certificate to it, Badal feigned ignorance over the issue.

Why I’m Still Not for Hillary Clinton

One goes to bed with the feeling that the next six weeks will include a national opportunity for all but the far right to take apart questions of race, gender, class and political integrity. In a way, it is the first 21st century election. Will Obama force Clinton into the new millennium? Can she meet my expectations?

Then her record enters my consciousness: her votes on Iraq, the Patriot Act and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard.

I wonder if I am, as antifeminists are constantly taunting, one of those women who is jealous of other women? Am I harder on women than on men? After all, the first qualified woman who becomes president is not likely to be everything a feminist would like her to be. Am I just not practical enough to hold my nose and go with a qualified woman? Clinton is to be respected for her intelligence, knowledge of the issues and consistent work for social justice.

Judge Endorses Separate N.Y. Arbitration on Adjustments to Historic ...

The adjustment the industry is seeking for 2004, the year which is the subject of the litigation, has been pegged at $1.1 billion.

Though the funds in question stem from 2004 calculations, the issues raised will most likely recur every year, and the 1998 accord requires that the annual payments extend in perpetuity.

Ramos is the first judge in the nation to rule that a state is entitled to its own, separate arbitration on claims that cigarette manufacturers have lost market share because of the obligations imposed by the 1998 settlement.

In the second ruling, Ramos rejected the state's contention that he should decide whether it has carried out its obligation under the 1998 pact to collect payments on cigarettes sold on Indian reservations. Instead, he ruled that issue must be decided as a part of the individual New York state arbitration.

Up-to-the-minute messaging system put to the test

At 3:20 p.m. Thursday, the words "CAMPUS ALERT" appeared on the Northern Illinois University Web site's home page, followed by a message staff members had prepared in advance, but hoped they would never use:

"There has been a report of a possible gunman on campus. Get to a safe area and take precautions until given the all clear."

The same message flashed out to all campus e-mail accounts, and was relayed automatically to office and dormitory phones.

This carefully orchestrated effort to get the word out was largely a response to last April's shootings at Virginia Tech, where a student went on a rampage that killed 33 people, including himself.

As campuses around the nation grappled with the horror of that massacre, administrators at NIU took their own preparations to a new level, going so far as to prepare the hypothetical template that could be used for near-instantaneous communication in an emergency.

A Mexican view of U.S. immigration debate

I don't agree with it, because I don't believe we should violate human rights in order to stop what the United States calls ''OTM,'' or ''other than Mexican,'' immigration. But unless it's part of an overall deal, as in comprehensive immigration reform, there's really no incentive to change. If there is an immigration agreement with Mexico, then there is incentive for Mexico to seal off its southern border in an honest, secure, humane way.

Q. Isn't there a Mexican interest in closing its southern border in a humane way?

A. What do we have to gain? They're not coming to Mexico, they're going to the United States.

Q. But doesn't Mexico have to deal with the consequences of the immigration, in terms of the criminal activity such as smuggling, and then the cost of deporting those they catch?

A.
