| Aramis Ramirez declines to discuss cockfighting
MESA, Ariz. – Aramis Ramirez arrived at spring training Tuesday and gladly talked about last season when he led the Cubs in RBIs and helped them win the NL Central. But the team’s star third baseman had little to say on a report about his passion for cockfighting in his native Dominican Republic.Ramirez batted .310, hit 26 homers and led the Cubs with 101 RBIs but struggled in the first round of the playoffs. He was 0-for-12 as the Cubs were swept by the Arizona Diamondbacks."You know, it happens," he said. "They were hot and played good. That wasn’t the reason we lost. We didn’t play well."The New York Times reported this month that Ramirez was featured in an issue of a Dominican cockfighting magazine, En La Traba, and is pictured with some roosters."When I’m in the Dominican Republic, I’m dedicated entirely to them," he was quoted as saying.Click here to read the rest at Chicago Baseball 365.

I enjoyed Danny O'Neil's article ("Hawks practice-squad players share house, car and common goal," Seattle Times, Dec. 26). I wish they had kept the term "taxi squad." The late Paul Brown named them that because they worked part time for the owner's taxi-cab business. We always root for the underdogs, so I hope they all make the team one day. — Bill Hemmenway, Issaquah Sonics There are other reasons for downfall Steve Kelley's column ("Allen has it all wrong — Sonics made right deal," Seattle Times, Dec. 28) about the Sonics trade of Ray Alen to the Celtics was right. But not for the reasons he cites. One playoff appearance in five years? That has a lot more to do with the previous ownership group shoving Nate McMillan out the door than with Ray Allen's abilities.

Outright roster purge or gradual transition?
Dimitroff and Smith have to be sure they find the right replacements, though because if they're going to make wholesale changes, they better not miss on the players they bring in. Not to say immediate results would be demanded by Blank but if things stagnate or get even worse over the next few years… Possibly weakening the Falcons' input on personnel was the loss of assistant general manager Billy Devaney, who bolted over the weekend to become the executive VP of football personnel with the St. Louis Rams. Devaney is a longtime pro personnel man who could have helped Dimitroff, whose background is scouting college personnel. Devaney is a solid pro personnel guy but with Blank's insistence on change, Devaney was never considered to replace Rich McKay as GM. In terms of the Falcons' roster, there is some talk that quarterback Chris Redman played well enough to generate the interest of some other teams around the league.

Faulk expects NFL to keep Spygate case under wraps
Did the New England Patriots secretly tape the Rams' final practice before Super Bowl 36? That story has been making the rounds, of course. In video comments delivered exclusively to Sprint mobile phone subscribers, retired Rams running back Marshall Faulk said he doubts that anything will surface from an investigation — if, in fact, the NFL opts to investigate. Faulk strongly implies that the NFL doesn't want to know the truth, even if former Patriots video man Matt Walsh comes forward with credible information. "My question is, why does it matter? It won't be investigated, and nothing will happen," Faulk said. "The Patriots will get to keep the Lombardi Trophy, and their rings. I mean, think about it. Think about the shield we're talking about. That shield being the grand scheme of things.

Lions must ride it out with Rogers
It's also up to Marinelli and his staff to do their jobs, to push Rogers to do his. And if he doesn't stay in shape, shame on Big Baby. If he doesn't, you bench or fine him or otherwise punish him, and even then I don't see how the Lions are way worse for having given it another shot. Remember last offseason? Remember the glee with which many welcomed cornerback Dre Bly's banishment to Denver? Hmm. How'd that work out? I remember the refrain well. Bly was divisive and had to be moved and everyone knew it. So in return, all the Lions got were Tatum Bell and George Foster, both eventually benched. And the Lions' biggest weakness, their ultimate undoing after the 6-2 start, was their lack of competent cornerbacks. Shocker. The Lions were so desperate to get rid of Bly, their leverage was nil and their options were limited.
