Curious few get a peek inside long-closed lightkeeper's house

COROLLA, N.C.

More than 100,000 people annually climb the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, but about 50 feet away sits the old lightkeeper's house, a part of the site rarely seen from the inside.

On Wednesday, the 133-year-old house was opened for the first publicly advertised tour since it was restored in the 1980s. It was restricted to about 20 people, and site manager Meghan Agresto had to turn away several.

"There was a clamor for it," she said. "Only a small number of people are going to get to see the inside of this home."

A few others have glimpsed it over the years, by appointment or invitation. Its small rooms and absence of hallways, as well as limited staff and funds to maintain the house, prevent opening it to the public, Agresto said.

Pete Visclosky on Friday night outside a local supermarket."It was terrifying," the 11-term Democratic congressman from Merrillville said Saturday while describing the strong-arm robbery, which he said probably lasted less than a minute.Visclosky said he doesn't think his assailant knew him because a witness said the suspect had been hanging around the store for a while. "I think I was just a target of opportunity."Visclosky said the robbery happened shortly after 9 p.m. as he was walking alone with groceries to his car, which was parked outside the south Merrillville market."I was putting my grocery bag on the back seat when I was grabbed from behind. I never saw it coming. He told me to 'Give it up.' twice. I thought it was going to be a carjacking."He said the man, who he described as black and "shorter than me" demanded Visclosky's wallet and keys.

Niedermayer to rejoin Ducks, delay retirement

ANAHEIM, Calif. - NHL playoffs MVP Scott Niedermayer will rejoin the Anaheim Ducks after sitting out the first 28 games of the season. The defending Stanley Cup champions are hoping Teemu Selanne will follow suit.

Ducks general manager Brian Burke announced Niedermayer's decision at a news conference a half-hour before Wednesday night's 4-1 victory over the Buffalo Sabres. When his opening remarks were replayed on the video board before the game and again during the first intermission, the sellout crowd of 17,174 roared its approval.

“I was pretty thrilled," said Rob Niedermayer, who got the word from his big brother by phone on Tuesday. “For sure, I've had a lot of fun playing with him the last two years, and I know it was a tough decision for him. I know everyone in this room is happy to have him back.
